Conservation
Easement Workshop
To Be Held At Naval Air Station Meridian
The Mississippi Land Trust and the Naval Air Station (NAS)
Meridian will be hosting a conservation easement workshop
on February 15th from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. This workshop
is being sponsored by the Mississippi Land Trust, NAS Meridian,
Wildlife Mississippi, Griffin Wildlife Services, Barber and
Mann, Inc. and Rea, Shaw, Giffin and Stuart.
According
to Daniel Coggin, Director of the Mississippi Land Trust,
“This workshop is designed for landowners, and their
legal/tax advisors, who own land adjacent to, or in close
proximity to NAS Meridian, Joe Williams Field (Bravo Field)
and the bombing range. It will be full of helpful presentations
from experts in the field of conservation easements.”
The Commanding
Officer of NAS Meridian, Captain Russell Knight, states, “During
the last 20 years, NAS Meridian has been visited by the Base
Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission four times and has
been excluded from the closure list each time because of its
remote location, rural setting, freedom from encroachment
and outstanding support from the community. NAS Meridian is
very important to the surrounding communities because of the
significant benefits it brings to the local economy. We would
like to keep it that way. The training of Navy carrier pilots
in turbojet aircraft requires unencumbered space to conduct
realistic training. The area that needs to be protected from
encroachment is the land closest to the runways, where the
noise of the jet aircraft conducting takeoff and landings
is loudest and the risk to those on the ground is highest.
Additionally, the Navy recognizes that landowners need to
be compensated for not developing the land surrounding the
air station, its outlying field and the target area. Conservation
easements are a way to protect the NAS Meridian training complex
from encroachment and to ensure that both the Navy and Mississippi
are winners as we continue our well established partnership
for years to come.”
The cost
for this workshop is being covered by the hosts. Snacks and
drinks will be provided. Those interested in attending can
